RENTING A CAR IN MEXICO

Having a car in Mexico allowed us the freedom to visit all the places we wanted to without relying on a crowded tour bus.
When planning our trip to Mexico I read a ton of reviews online about horrible experiences with renting cars there. Lots of people felt like they were ripped off, told they had to purchase a special insurance policy, and just downright had bad experiences with customer service.
While I can’t guarantee these things won’t happen to you, I can share my experiences with renting a car which were actually quite pleasant.
Once our plane landed at the airport, we shopped around with different car rental representatives until we met one that was nice and offered reasonable prices. Having done my research, I had an idea of how much a car rental should be per day, and I also knew I didn’t want to be forced to purchase an expensive coverage plan like I had read about online. We communicated this with the representative and once he agreed to everything we said, we were good to go.
We ended up renting our car from Avis. All in all, we had a great experience with the car rental. Our flights home were delayed by two days and we needed the car for longer, so they graciously extended our rental over the phone without any fees.

Take photos of the interior and exterior of the car, as well as the milage. It’s good to be safe and have all of this documents.

While you don’t have to purchase the most expensive package, I always recommend getting decent coverage so you don’t risk owing tons of money if anything goes wrong during your travels.
